Energy Efficiency - Demand Response Driven Energy Advancements (DREAMS)

2022-2025

The DREAMS (‘Energy Efficiency – Demand Response Driven Energy Advancements’) project is funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Royal Norwegian Embassy, New Delhi). DREAMS is a 3-year project from 2022 to 2025 to implement Automated Demand Response (ADR) pilots in India.

The project consortium comprises of 6 partners including:

  • Smart Innovation Norway (SIN) – Project Coordinator
  • Research and Innovation Circle of Hyderabad (RICH) – Pilot Manager
  • Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A)

and 3 Distribution Companies – DISCOMs

  • BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL), Delhi, India
  • BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL), Delhi, India
  • Noida Power Company Limited (NPCL), Noida, India

Project Goal

The project goal is to empower consumers, promote energy efficiency and decarbonisation by the wide-scale deployment of data-driven demand response (DR) technology developed using a societal co-creation approach. The project will create pathways to institutionalise DR initiatives across India, thus contributing to India’s international climate goals and clean energy access.

Project Impact

  • Higher integration of renewables
  • Just transition of society towards decarbonisation and alleviation of energy poverty.

Primary objectives of the project

  • Unlock, demonstrate and promote demand response and real-time consumer insights to increase the renewable hosting capacity of the grid, bring energy efficiency in consumer behaviour and offer support to grid operators through flexibility services.
  • Leverage digitisation and IoT to empower and transform consumers to prosumers and create a consumer-driven participative energy ecosystem.
  • Design and implement consumer engagement mechanism, customized across different demographic consumers to reduce consumer energy costs and improve on energy poverty, energy justice, and enhanced clean energy access.
  • Provide Grid Operator with greener and more cost-effective alternatives for demand fulfilment beyond supply-side expansion.
  • Provide the right template for sustainability, scalability, and replicability of demand response and real-time consumer insights across India including contributing to regulatory and policy advancement in this field.
