The framework helped guide user engagement, co-creation activities, and social acceptance work across the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&laquo;The framework recognised that households are different. People&#8217;s motivations, living situations, energy knowledge, comfort needs, and trust in technology all influence how they respond to new energy solutions,&raquo; notes Terttunen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By addressing these differences, the framework helped project partners design engagement activities, communication strategies, and incentives that were better suited to the needs of different user groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-from-framework-to-practice\">From framework to practice<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The Social Science Framework was not only a theoretical exercise. It was applied across DEDALUS pilot activities through co-creation workshops, user segmentation, persona development, and social acceptance analyses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This work helped ensure that demand response solutions were designed with users in mind, including vulnerable households, elderly residents, and people with varying levels of digital literacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/smartinnovationnorway.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/05_Pilot-Spain-edited.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30962\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartinnovationnorway.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/05_Pilot-Spain-edited.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/smartinnovationnorway.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/05_Pilot-Spain-edited-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/smartinnovationnorway.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/05_Pilot-Spain-edited-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/smartinnovationnorway.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/05_Pilot-Spain-edited-18x10.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Spanish pilot was implemented in La Seu d\u2019Urgell, and tested district-level energy optimisation in a local energy community involving 12 dwellings.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&laquo;The project showed that successful participation depends on more than financial incentives. Trust, comfort, ease of use, transparency, and a sense of control are equally important factors when encouraging people to engage with new energy services,&raquo; says Terttunen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-contributing-to-european-knowledge-sharing\">Contributing to European knowledge sharing<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Smart Innovation Norway also helped bring DEDALUS results to a wider European audience. It covered 56 social housing apartments, combining district heating optimisation with indoor climate management.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&laquo;The message was clear: the energy transition must be built <em>with<\/em> people, not only <em>for<\/em> them,&raquo; comments Terttunen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-lasting-lesson-from-dedalus\">A lasting lesson from DEDALUS<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>DEDALUS leaves behind valuable tools, insights, and experiences for the future of residential demand response in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Smart Innovation Norway, one lesson stands out: the energy transition cannot be driven by technology alone. Smart energy solutions must also be understandable, trustworthy, and relevant for the people who use them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By combining technological innovation with behavioural science, user engagement, and social innovation, DEDALUS demonstrated how energy flexibility can be designed not only for people, but with
