He adds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cComfort, trust, and ease of use can make or break participation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-social-science-is-essential-for-energy-flexibility\">Why social science is essential for energy flexibility<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Demand response is often framed as a technical challenge, focusing on digital solutions, automation, and system optimisation. However, real-world participation depends just as much on people\u2019s everyday lives, priorities, and concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The DEDALUS project starts from a simple premise: Europe\u2019s flexibility goals cannot be reached through technology alone. Social acceptance, trust, and motivation are equally decisive factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Read also:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/smartinnovationnorway.com\/en\/nyheter\/strengthens-collaboration-and-knowledge-exchange-in-the-beflexible-project\/\">Smart Innovation Norway strengthens collaboration and knowledge exchange in the BeFlexible project<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHuman-centred demand response is not optional \u2013 it\u2019s an essential path to scale,\u201d says Terttunen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To address this, the DEDALUS Social Science Framework was developed as part of the project\u2019s Work Package 2, with Smart Innovation Norway holding a leading role and main responsibility. Factors such as living situation, energy knowledge, socio-economic conditions, comfort needs, age, and trust in automation all shape how people perceive and experience demand response solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe idea is to meet people where they are, not where we want them to be,\u201d notes Terttunen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second pillar, <em>goal setting<\/em>, highlights the importance of clear, measurable goals and continuous feedback. When people understand what is expected of them, believe they can succeed, and are able to track their progress, they are more likely to engage and sustain new behaviours \u2013 including participation in demand response at household level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The third pillar, <em>motivation<\/em>, brings together both intrinsic and extrinsic drivers. Intrinsic motivation can stem from contributing to sustainability, supporting grid stability, or helping the community. Extrinsic motivation may include financial savings, rewards, tokens, or other tangible incentives. By acknowledging both, the framework supports more inclusive and effective engagement strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-from-theory-to-practice-in-european-pilots\">From theory to practice in European pilots<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Within DEDALUS, the Social Science Framework is actively applied through co-creation workshops, user segmentation, and persona development across multiple European pilot sites.
